League History

In 1973, the league was the brain child of Robert Wagner and was created by Robert Wagner, Jerry Dusek, Ron Rizzo and Don Dodge.  The league started with six teams consisting of twelve players each and each team represented a district or a unit.

Robert Wagner was the leagues president from 1973 thru 1980 and his secretary was Jerry Dusek.  Ron Rizzo became the league president in 1981 and served for five years thru 1985. Don Dodge served as his secretary during Rizzo’s presidency. By this time, the league had grown to eight teams with twelve members on each team.

Don Dodge became the president in 1986 and introduced the present league structure by developing teams by way of a draft system.   This system eliminated teams from being loaded with low handicap players that dominated matches.  It also gave players with less ability the opportunity to be part of the league and be placed on a team.  With the draft system, the league became more competitive and created balance in the league standings.  The system also gave retirees the opportunity to participate and stay in touch with active police officers.  The league has had as many as 124 players and today is supported by 120.

Don Dodge served as president from 1986 thru 1993 with David Dioguardi as his secretary from 1986 thru 1992.  Ray Johnson became the league secretary in 1993 and remains today.  Don Dodge resigned as president in 1994 and John Gallagher was elected to the post.  John served until 1996 when he resigned and Don Dodge again became president in 1997 and still serves today.

The league started at the Palos C.C. and played there for five years. It then moved to the Old Oak C.C. and since then we have seen it turn from a hardpan cow pasture to a well maintained quality course.

The league is open to any active or retired Chicago Police officer that is or was a member of the Chicago Police Department. Entry forms can be obtained by emailing cpdgolfleague@yahoo.com
