KEN RUGGIERO
Ken joined the department in 1994 and is currently working as a tactical officer in the 1st district. Ken joined the golf league in 1996 as a below average player and soon became the league's best.
Known as Mr. Ruggiero by most of his opponents, he has been awarded, Most valuable player in 1998, Low scratch game in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, & 2004 with Scores of 71, 73, 70, 69, 68, & 72, Low Average 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002 with averages of 78, 77, 78, & 75, 1998 Low Handicap Game 61, Winning Team Captain in 2003 and was runner up in the Texas hold-em tournament during the league's golf trip to St. Augustine Florida in 2004.
The highlight of Ken's golfing accomplishments was in 2002 when he was low scratch score in the Police vs Fire Department Charity golf outing for Big Brothers Big Sisters. That score gave him an invitation to play in the Advil Western Open Pro-Am Tournament at Cog Hill. He played with professional golfer, Robert Allenby, and Ken's bagger was his Uncle Tony Ruggiero who shaved his head for the event. Allenby was puzzled by the large audience following his group because most spectators were staying in one location so they could see all the pros. Ken informed Allenby that they were not following him, they were following Ken, they are all police officers and members of the Chicago Police Golf League. Allenby was not upset and said he felt well protected by Kenny's followers and appreciated there presence (Eat your heart out "Tiger"). After the round, Allenby spent time with the group and participated in a group picture with Kenny and several of his friends. During the round, Allenby complimented Ken on his driving ability and told him he should be hitting from the back tees with the pros. It was great that Ken drew a nice guy like Robert Allenby as a playing partner.
Ken's Father, Frank was detailed to the Mayor's Office and is now retired. Frank was a member of the golf league for over 20 years along with Ken's Uncle Tony (Bagger) Ruggiero who retired as a Detective out of Area 1. Tony was low handicap game in 1988 when he shot a 59 and Frank was low handicap game in 2003 with a 60.
Ken has been very instrumental in strengthening the league with his continuous recruitment of young players. Ken has always been a class act and is someone you should know.
